Not So Long Ago, In Iraq

“It hasn’t taken long for the Iraq war to feel like a relic of history. Although U.S. troops withdrew from the conflict a mere 17 months ago, the story of the war already seems set in a bygone era—circumstances that have quickly been buried under an avalanche of newer crises. Photojournalist Michael Kamber, who covered the war for The New York Times from 2003 to 2012, noticed America’s desire to tune out the war while the battles were still raging. Visiting home while on leave during the war’s early years, Kamber grew frustrated that Americans were ill informed about the conflict, leading, he felt, to a public that didn’t care enough about the bloodshed he was documenting. His frustration grew as the conflict wore on, as the U.S. military took an active role in encouraging public indifference by censoring what could be photographed.

Now Kamber has responded with Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq, a riveting account of the conflict as told by three dozen of the war’s most prominent photographers. Kamber’s interviews with his colleagues cover the war as they saw it—their passion for the story, their fears and daily complications, and the trauma they live with still today. Some of their images are among the most iconic of the war, some are previously unpublished, and many are gruesome, shocking, and utterly dispiriting.

The book is out on May 15, 2013, via University of Texas Press.”

Doctor stops to help accident victim, disrespected for her race

Last Friday, Phyllis Phukubye, 27, left Helen Joseph Hospital and headed home but had to stop when she saw a motorcycle accident victim on Douglas Road, Saturday Star reported.

When she arrived on the scene, she saw that the victim was badly hurt and many bystanders surrounded him.

Phukubye introduced herself to the victim and the people who were standing around, “mostly white people”.

“I put on my gloves and attempted to assist the man. But no one seemed to believe that I was a doctor or a health professional, because they kept uttering stupid remarks in the background. They were even telling me what to do and what not to do,” she told the newspaper.

Phukubye said a white lady assumed that she was a nurse and kept saying to her that her son’s friend was a doctor and he was on his way to the scene.

Paramedics arrived and they also “shooed ” her away even physically pushing her.

She finally walked away, assuming that the patient was in good hands.

So… when I talk about the fact that people are more invested in white supremacy than survival…

This is why I always laugh at libertarians and those “the real issue is class” people all the time. They claim that a person’s desire to make money will override their prejudice, and that they will make “rational” decisions because everybody want’s to make money. Yet time and again they would rather put their life aside if it means upholding white supremacy.

I am not a doctor but this happens to me all the time. No matter how many times you state your authority or position, people will defer to the white person…and its the same kind of shooing away…they’d really rather suffer, die, and have chaos rather than acknowledge your skills and defer to your position.

Why isn't New Orleans Mother's Day parade shooting a 'national tragedy'?:

“…the Mother’s Day Parade shooting has largely been forgotten. On Sunday, shots were fired into a crowd during a parade in the New Orleans 7th ward. Police said they saw three suspects running from the scene.

This is the largest mass shooting in the United States where the shooters were still at large after the crime was committed. Think about that for a minute. From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Fort Hill to Aurora, all the shooters were either killed or apprehended on site. But the person or people responsible for shooting 19 Americans are still free.

…Because this is an act of domestic terrorism right? Just because the alleged shooter was wearing a white tee and jeans does that suddenly make the shooting a gang-related affair? And we all know how irrelevant gang-related shootings are in America….

Now take a moment and imagine a Mother’s Day Parade in the suburbs of Denver, a neighborhood in Edina or a plaza in Austin where bullets rain down on civilians and even hit children. I can’t help but imagine the around-the-clock news coverage. And I can’t help but think it’s because most of America can identify with the fear of being bombarded with gunfire while just enjoying a parade in the middle of town. But America can’t identify with being at a parade in the “inner city” where “gang violence” erupts. The “oh my God, that could happen to me” factor isn’t present with a story about New Orleans or the Chicago southside.”
